10/9 – A Leader’s Guide to ThriveAbility: A Multi-Capital Operating System for a Regenerative Inclusive Economy
Maureen Metcalf
Robin has brilliantly woven his ThriveAbility model into a field manual for executives, policy makers and change agents in service of creating a better world for future generations. Earth’s 7.3 billion citizens are currently consuming 1.6 times its available resources. This rate is clearly not sustainable, and trends indicate it will continue to rise. We have already hit a critical point. We are already seeing serious adverse impacts. These trends will continue unless we take immediate and dramatic action to reverse them.
At the foundation of A Leader’s Guide to ThriveAbility: A Multi-Capital Operating System for a Regenerative Inclusive Economy is the point that leaders must change their thinking or mindset before embarking on the massive system change required. We (including me) need to rethink who we are and how we interact with every aspect of our lives. We need to live with in a smaller “footprint” and consider what we can do to regenerate the world we impact rather than allowing it to degenerate.
This sounds like a lofty goal. It certainly is – and yet, we have no alternative unless we want the lives of the next generation to be notably worse than ours. We have a choice at this moment to leave a legacy of regeneration – using all our resources to view our role as leaders differently, focus our efforts differently and take different actions. We will also measure our value differently. We will need to look at the total impact we make on what are currently considered external stakeholders. We need to turn these changes we are making into a competitive advantage for our organizations so they are rewarded for building regenerative organizations.
Robin gives poignant examples of leaders who are already making these choices. He provides a “prescription” that supports leaders in tailoring the ThriveAbility framework to their organizations, and offers a range of case studies and stories to learn from what others have done as well as a set of tools that help predict the impact of any transformation being considered.
Simply put, this book is a true user manual for anyone interested in making sustainable changes.
Next he offers a set of tools that will help you predict the impact you should expect to see given the investment you are making in your transformation. This book is a true user’s manual for everyone interested in making sustainable changes. It is packed with comprehensive diagrams to support your efforts.
If you are interested in a taste of Robin’s work, we will be publishing one of his papers in November. You can also hear him on Voice America Radio with Maureen Metcalf in the first of two segments, released in fall 2015. The first is available on Voice America and iTunes. The second will air on October 27 in the US and October 28 in Europe.
