The First International Worldly Leadership Summit at The Leadership Trust 22-23 September 2009

Worldly Leadership – Leadership of and for the World

Berkhamsted
Hertfordshire HP4 1NS
United Kingdom

Never before has leadership throughout the world been more critical and more needed. Leadership is in the spotlight, and yet current models have failed to address the major problems the world faces. If we are to create new models to take the world forward more sustainably, we believe that there is value in looking back and re-learning what we may have forgotten.

We invite you to join us at this Summit for an exploration of the leadership wisdoms enshrined in alternative philosophies; not only western and eastern, but including those found in indigenous traditions; and to discuss and reflect on the practical implications.

Hosted by The Leadership Trust, in partnership with Ashridge Business School and Globally Responsible Leadership Initiative(founded by EFMD and the UN Global Compact), the Summit will bring together a rich and diverse group of eminent speakers from around the world, but will also offer opportunity for us to reflect as well as to plan to take action, individually and collectively.

Full details of our project, the Summit programme, speakers and the draft programme are available at www.leadership.org. Book your place at the Worldly Leadership Summit for £295.00* by completing the registration form also available at worldlyleadership.org , or by calling Linda Keirby-Smith on +44 (0) 1989 760 705.

Prize Essay Competition – Learning that has helped leaders in Public Services

Each year, Ashridge Business School and Guardian Public invite people working or studying in any area of the public service, whether in the public, private or voluntary sector, to submit an essay on the theme of leadership and public services.

The essay title: What do I know now that I wish I’d known then…? Learning that has helped me to become a better leader.

Content and style
Essays can be any length up to a maximum of 3,000 words and should aim to bring fresh insight and understanding to the subject in a public sector context, with clear recommendations on the way forward. Ashridge’s style is strongly practical and we value ideas that can be readily applied. Essays should relate to current best practice as well as new ways of working. They should be jargon free, making points as concretely and clearly as possible. The judges are looking for contributions that challenge, but also make strong, well argued cases with positive ideas for the future of leadership in public services rather than purely academic, polemical or diagnostic pieces. The winning essay should be readily publishable, edited or in full, in Guardian Public and by Ashridge.

Timetable
The closing date for entries is Friday 30 October 2009. Prize winners and merit awards will be announced during December with a lunchtime reception for prize winners in London in January 2010.

Prizes
The winner will receive a choice of a cash prize of £3,000 or a place on an Ashridge Open programme of their choice worth up to £13,000. The essay will be published in full or in edited form in Guardian Public and the short-listed entrants will be invited to the prize giving ceremony. Up to two further prizes will be awarded if the judges consider the quality of the essays merits recognition. Public servants can accept the prize provided they declare it.

Call for Papers
Leadership Special issue on Italy and leadership
- Leadership journal homepage: http://lea.sagepub.com/ –
Editor: Antonio Marturano (marturanoa@luiss.it) LUISS Guido Carli, Rome (Italy)

Italy has had an amazing fabric of leaders and ideas on leadership since the Romans: Italy indeed did not only provide all kinds of leaders (from Machiavellian-amoralist leaders to saint and value-centred leaders) but also many Italian scholars have helped us to think about leadership. From Marc Aurelius, Machiavelli, Gramsci, to Agamben, today, Italian scholars have provided tools with which to understand the leadership phenomena. On the other hand Caesars, the Church, the Renaissance, the Mafia, Mussolini and Fascism, leftist movements in the ‘70s, the Agnelli Family and today’s Berlusconism provide key features useful to understand leadership, leadership culture, followership and leaders’ behaviours.

Such immense reservoir of leaders and leadership ideas, provide conceptual contradictions that are even challenging established paradigms in leadership studies. Leadership studies indeed is a quite multidisciplinary field as it takes lessons from history, politics, narrative, philosophy, management, law, psychology, sociology and many other fields. Therefore Italy, with its own history, social complexity and contemporary political muddles, is a good field to test, rethink and improve leadership studies concepts and theories. Moreover Italy is a sort of laboratory to understanding social trends. Where are societies going? Which kind of leadership is likely to emerge worldwide? Which kind of national culture has encouraged Berlusconism? Which leadership concepts and theories have been changed through Italian history and how has this happened?

Articles are invited which address these and similar topics. Papers can be of a theoretical or empirical nature, or investigate practical concerns. They can be drawn from any research tradition; contributions of both a quantitative and a qualitative nature are invited.

Enquiries, expressions of interest and submission of abstracts (500 words maximum) should be sent to the Guest Editor shown at the address above. Abstracts should arrive by 1 April 2010. Completed articles of between 6,000-8,000 words should be submitted by 31 January 2011 at the latest for review. Articles will be double blind reviewed. The issue will be published in Summer 2012.
